ColaCao Traditional
Instant Chocolate Drink Mix. Mix the powder with milk or water for a rich, chocolatey treat. Colacao is thicker than American-style hot chocolate, but not quite as thick as Spanish-style drinking chocolate. The original version leaves the bits of sweet powder many enjoy eating.
ColaCao is a popular instant cocoa powder of Spanish origin, launched in 1945 by Nutrexpa (now Idilia Foods), famous for its flavor, texture, and characteristic lumps. It is made with natural cocoa, sugar, and kola-malted cereal cream, and is a traditional breakfast or snack mixed with milk.
Instructions: Dissolves in hot or cold milk. A popular technique to avoid lumps is to first make a paste with the powder and a little milk, adding the rest later.
Ingredients: Contains sugar, natural defatted cocoa, kola-malted cereal cream (wheat flour, barley malt), mineral salts (calcium, phosphorus), and flavorings.
Versions: Although “Original” is the most classic, there are varieties such as 0% sugar, Noir, or with fiber.
It is a childhood icon in Spain, often consumed with Maria cookies.
It is used in baking to make cakes, muffins, and chocolate cakes.
